First of all, it feels like 100 degrees in my room here in Green Bay and I need to turn on the AC in the middle of winter! I did not go to bed until 3:00am last night because I was finishing some broadcast notes and updates, but I woke up sweating at 6:13am. So much for the sleep!
But, did I wake up because I was hot or was it because I’m still thinking about the game from last night. I think it’s the latter.
After a stellar night on special teams, one that included a perfect three-for-three on the power play, the Storm lost to the top team in the league 7-5.
Sure, Green Bay is a solid team and is the pick by many of my broadcast colleagues in the USHL to win both the Anderson Cup and Clark Cup, but the Storm could have won this game!

Sometimes it’s easy to say who the best playmaker is in any league, if you base that on the assists column. However, it’s tough to do this because so many players have a good amount of secondary assists.
What if we took away the second assist from the assist stat and only took the primary assist (or known as the first assist)?
This would tell us a bit more…

Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays. I certainly enjoyed seeing family and friends this year. However, it’s hard to miss hockey action through the break especially with one of our Storm players playing at the World Junior Championships in Saskatchewan.
The Storm’s Radoslav Illo has been great for Team Slovakia scoring one goal and adding three assists in the first two games at the tournament. He was named the player of the game for Slovakia against Team USA on the opening day of the tournament and is second in scoring on Team Slovakia.
However, Slovakia (1-1) lost to Team USA 7-3 (not Team USA – U18 or U17, although Jason Zucker and Jack Campbell of the U18 team are playing for the U20 squad), as Illo only had one assist in the first game for Slovakia.

After the Storm won two games this past weekend, I ask everyone, what did we learn about the Storm?
Sure the team played well to start both games, getting the first goal in both games. Tri-City is now 8-2-1 when scoring the opening goal.
Goalie Steven Bolton started both games and allowed only six goals against two of the top offenses in the league… not too bad for a young goalie!
Jaden Schwartz, who’s fourth in the USHL in scoring, had four points, as the top three scorers in the league (Matt White, Omaha; T.J. Tynan, Des Moines; Erik Haula, Omaha) combined for just one point against the Storm. That point was on Haula’s assist on Friday night.

The saying is true, “There’s no place like home.”
After a long month of November to disremember, one that included 17 of the 30 days away from Kearney, the Storm players and coaching staff are resting better at night in their own beds.
The Storm will play all eight games in the month of December in the state of Nebraska, and six games here in Kearney.
No overnight trips for the Storm to go on, which means the team can get full use of practices and off-ice workouts. (When you’re on the road, these things often get overlooked.)
Tri-City is prepping for another two-game home series this weekend, as the Storm battle the Omaha Lancers on Friday night and challenges the Des Moines Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon.
