Records Are Made To Be Broken

By Skip Berry on 3/9/2010 10:28 AM

This 2009-2010 season will go down as one of the best seasons to have followed the Tri-City Storm. Although, it’ll be pretty tough to compare this season to the 2003-04 season when the Storm captured the franchises only Anderson Cup.

Nonetheless, this Storm team has rewritten the team record books at least 22 times (tied or broke records) and by all accounts exceeded the previous two seasons here in Central Nebraska. But, there could be more records to fall soon.

Of course 13 of the records were either matched or broke by number 8 – Jaden Schwartz, who came into this season with a lot of hype around him. To his credit, Schwartz has lived up to the hype and in fact has solidified him as the greatest offensive machine this franchise has ever seen.

Highest Rated Hockey Game in U.S. History

By Skip Berry on 3/1/2010 2:03 PM

What a game on NBC last night! I never thought I would see in my lifetime a 17.6+ overnight Nielsen rating (percent of Americans watching the game) for hockey. Compound that with the excitement of a great game, you have to feel like hockey made a solid impression to casual fans.

So, how’s does the NHL capitalize off this outstanding event? Well, I have several ideas, but here’s what the NHL needs to do to help hockey grow a larger fan base in the U.S.

Market players like Ryan Miller, Zach Parise, Patrick Kane, Paul Stastny and Ryan Kesler a bit more in the NHL national campaigns.

Miracle in Canada or Miracle on Ice?

By Skip Berry on 2/22/2010 12:03 PM

First of all, what an amazing game last night in the Olympics! Who would have thought Team U.S.A. would have beat Canada?

Some people are saying this game was bigger than the 1980 - “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid, NY, which was exactly 30 years ago today.

Let’s take a step backwards and look at the 1980 Olympics when U.S.A. won the gold in men’s ice hockey.

The U.S. President Jimmy Carter just signed the SALT II agreement with Soviet Union leader - Leonid Ilyich Brezhnevin in 1979, which was the agreement that ended the Cold War with nuclear disarmament by both countries.

How Should Fighting Be Viewed?

By Skip Berry on 2/17/2010 4:06 PM

Fighting is part of the game, but to what level has always been a great debate.

The question I hear a lot from casual sports/hockey fans is "why can you fight in hockey and not in any other sport?"

My reply to fighting in hockey –

Hockey is played with weapons (sticks) and players moving upwards at 35 mph on the ice, which is the only sport that can claim these two elements in the world.

Can’t Sleep… So Hello and Good Morning!

By Skip Berry on 2/4/2010 8:03 AM

First of all, it feels like 100 degrees in my room here in Green Bay and I need to turn on the AC in the middle of winter! I did not go to bed until 3:00am last night because I was finishing some broadcast notes and updates, but I woke up sweating at 6:13am. So much for the sleep!

But, did I wake up because I was hot or was it because I’m still thinking about the game from last night. I think it’s the latter.

After a stellar night on special teams, one that included a perfect three-for-three on the power play, the Storm lost to the top team in the league 7-5.

Sure, Green Bay is a solid team and is the pick by many of my broadcast colleagues in the USHL to win both the Anderson Cup and Clark Cup, but the Storm could have won this game!
