CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA – The Tri-City Storm shocked the Sioux Falls Stampede with a come-from-behind victory late Thursday night at the 2023 DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. August Falloon scored a powerplay goal with less than five minutes to play to force an overtime finish to the contest. He also netted a goal during the overtime period to send the Storm home from the event with a perfect 2-0-0-0 record. Tri-City goaltender Cameron Korpi put together a sensational effort in net to post back-to-back victories at the Fall Classic. The Storm completed the two-game sweep at the event with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Stampede. Tri-City dealt an opening-night loss to the defending Clark Cup Champion Youngstown Phantoms the previous night to open play in the 2023-2024 USHL Regular Season. Tri-City now returns home to host the Sioux City Musketeers on Friday, September 29
th for the organization's Home Opener at the Viaero Center. Puck drop for the battle is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.
The Storm was outshot 11-2 during Thursday night's opening period, and the 2
nd period began in a scoreless tie. The lone scoring play of the middle period was a powerplay goal from the Stampede's Chistopher Pelosi with less than two minutes to play. Pelosi's scoring play was his first of the regular season, and was assisted by Will McDonough and Kazimier Sobieski. The Storm outshot the Stampede 14-9 in the 2
nd period, but trailed by a single goal entering Thursday night's 3
rd period. Tri-City was 3-20-2-3 last season when trailing after 2 periods.
Tri-City's powerplay broke through for its first goal of the regular season with under five minutes to play in Thursday night's 3
rd period. August Fallon netted his first goal of the year at 15:46 of the 3
rd period to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Alex Bales and Ryan Smith each recorded an assist on the Storm's opening powerplay goal of the season. Tri-City netted 57 powerplay goals last season, the most of any team in the USHL's Western Conference. The Stampede outshot the Storm 9-8 during Thursday night's 3
rd period, and the matchup required an overtime period to decide a winner.
The Stampede came out firing during overtime and recorded the first five shots of the period. August Falloon finished off a net front play from Artemi Nizameyev and buried the game-winning goal into the back of the net to lift the Storm to a thrilling, come-from-behind, overtime victory in the team's final game at this year's Fall Classic. Falloon's goal was scored at 2:26 of the overtime period, and was assisted by Artemi Nizameyev, and Philippe Blais-Savoie. The scoring play was the 18
th goal of Falloon's USHL career. Thursday night's game was the third multi-goal game of his career. Despite being outshot 5-1 in overtime, and 34-25 overall during the matchup, the Storm skated away with a 2-1 victory, and improved to 2-0-0-0 overall in the 2023-2024 regular season. Tri-City is now guaranteed to have at least a share of first place in the league standings when all play at the 2023 DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic concludes on Sunday.
Cameron Korpi backed up his solid opening-night performance with an equally impressive result in Thursday night's game. He denied 23 of 24 shots in Tri-City's 2-1 win over the Youngstown Phantoms in the team's regular season opener on Wednesday. Korpi stopped 33 of Sioux Falls' 34 shots on net during last night's game. He improved to 2-0-0-0 on the season in goal for the Storm with the win. Michael Chambre made 23 saves on 25 shots and recorded the loss in goal for the Stampede. Tri-City's powerplay finished the game 1/6, and the Storm's penalty kill was 2/3 during the matchup. The Storm has won each of its games at the USHL Fall Classic over the past three seasons. Tri-City completes this year's edition of the Fall Classic on a six-game winning streak at the event.
