KEARNEY, NE – Reid Morich collected a hat trick and Daniel Moor stopped 30 of 32 shots in the Waterloo net to lift the Black Hawks over the Tri-City Storm 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Viaero Center.
Waterloo's six goals were the most allowed in a game this season by Tri-City.
The Black Hawks' victory (5-2-1, 11 pts) was Waterloo's second win in three games this weekend. Tri-City (2-3-2, 6 pts) grabbed two points over its three-game homestand.
Waterloo came out strong in the first period and possessed the puck most of the frame. The Black Hawks outshot Tri-City 10-4 after 20 minutes. The Storm committed four minor penalties in the first period and seven in the game.
Waterloo opened the game's scoring at the 16:53 mark of the first. Reid Morich retrieved a loose puck on the right wing of the Tri-City zone and walked to the right half wall. Morich then swept a snapshot toward the Storm net which beat Tri-City goaltender Erick Roest above the right shoulder.
The Black Hawks tallied a power play goal a little over two minutes later after Tri-City's Colby Woogk was called for a tripping minor. Brock Schultz fed his teammate Ryan Zaremba, who ripped a shot up high on Roest from the left circle of the Waterloo zone to make it 2-0 Black Hawks.
A combined five goals were scored in the second period, where the Storm collected 16 shots compared to the Black Hawks' six.
Waterloo took a 3-0 lead with another power play tally at the 1:07 mark of the frame when Kaeden Hawkins scored his fourth goal of the season on a one-timer from the right circle. The Black Hawks' power play went a strong 2-for-6 in the game.
The Storm battled in the middle portion of the second period to put up their first two goals of the afternoon. Tri-City got on the scoreboard thanks to a nice Rhys Wallin score from the bottom of the right circle 6:16 into the frame. Wallin received an incredible pass from Lincoln Hjelm in the bottom of the left circle and ripped a shot top-left corner past Waterloo goaltender Daniel Moor. The goal was Wallin's third of the season, which ties for the team lead.
Slightly over two minutes later, the Storm made it a one-goal game. Nolan Roed skated the puck up the left wing from the Tri-City blue line into the Waterloo zone and fired a shot near the top of the left circle that beat Moor up high to make it 3-2. Roed collected his third goal of the season, also tying Tri-City's team-high. The St. Cloud commit has now scored in three straight games.
The Black Hawks shut down any Storm momentum quickly after the Waterloo lead was cut to one. Matthew Lansing made it a 4-2 game with a backdoor shot after a nifty left wing pass from Jesse Orlowsky on a rush at the 9:12 mark of the second. The Waterloo lead grew to 5-2 on Morich's third tally of the season about three minutes later.
No goals were scored in the third period until late in the frame when Waterloo grew its lead to four. Tri-City pulled Roest with around two and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Morich found the empty net with a little less than two minutes left to complete his hat trick.
Roest stopped 16 of 22 shots in the Storm net during his fourth start of the year. Tri-City could not cash in on three power play attempts during the contest, and are now 2-for-25 on the man advantage this season.
