LINCOLN, NE – Three massive third-period goals from Nolan Roed, Ilia Morozov, and Artemi Nizameyev respectively helped the Tri-City Storm knock off the Lincoln Stars 5-3 at the Ice Box on Friday night.
Tri-City (4-4-2, 10 pts) has won three of its first five road games. The Lincoln (8-2-0, 16 pts) loss snapped a Stars' seven-game winning streak, the longest by any USHL team this year. It was also Lincoln's first defeat at the Ice Box this season.
Tri-City opened the scoring 11:54 into the game. The Storm's Carson Pilgrim had possession on the right wing of the Tri-City offensive zone, then sent the puck rinkwide. Ashton Dahms, in his first game with the Storm after being acquired in a trade with Des Moines earlier this week, retrieved the pass at the left point. The Minnesota-Duluth commit then walked to the left wing face-off dot and fired a snapshot past Lincoln goaltender William Prowse. It was Dahms' first tally of the season. The forward did not score in eight games to start the year with Des Moines.
After Tri-City's Carson Pilgrim took a slashing penalty with just over a minute left in the opening period, Lincoln scored on the game's first power play to tie the contest at one. Alex Pelletier fed the puck from the right wing circle to Caeden Herrington at the left face off dot. Herrington quickly snapped a shot through traffic past Tri-City netminder Erick Roest with approximately 30 seconds remaining in the frame.
Tri-City had three power play attempts in the first half of the second period, but couldn't produce a goal on any. The Storm went 0-for-4 in power play opportunities on the night.
The Storm did score at the 13:04 mark of the second period on a beautiful rush play. Nizameyev snatched a turned-over puck at the Storm blue line and rushed it up the right wing of the ice. At the bottom of the right wing circle in the Lincoln zone, Nizameyev sent an incredible pass to the back door of the Stars' net, where Shaun McEwen tipped the puck past Prowse off the left post. It was McEwen's second goal of the season.
A little less than two minutes later, Lincoln applied offensive zone pressure and tied the game. Nik Young fired a snapshot from the center point into netfront traffic. The shot was tipped by Gio Digiulian next to Roest into the back of the cage. Digulian, a Cornell commit, netted his third goal of the season.
Tri-City broke the tie less than a minute into the third period. Roed skated the puck to the left wing circle of the Lincoln zone. The St. Cloud State commit fired it top shelf on Prowse for his fourth of the year. Roed has tallied in four of his last six games.
At the 7:25 mark of the third, Lincoln again tied the game. After the Storm lost possession from a turnover on the right-wing boards in their defensive end, Lincoln's Kade Kohanski picked up a loose puck directly in front of the Storm net and slipped a shot past Roest to make it 3-3.
Tri-City would tally the game-winner not long after, as Ilia Morozov got the puck on the left wing in the neutral zone and drove it to the left faceoff dot in the Lincoln end of the ice. Morozov, who scored his second goal of the season, put a snapshot in the back of the Lincoln net on Prowse's glove side at the 8:50 mark to make it a 4-3 contest.
Still down 4-3, the Stars pulled Prowse with around 2:30 remaining and generated several good scoring chances in the next minute. With 1:36 to go, Lincoln's Matt Maltais hooked Dahms who was carrying the puck into the Stars zone.
Lincoln again pulled Prowse while shorthanded, but Nizameyev found the empty net from near center ice with 51 seconds remaining to hand Tri-City a 5-3 advantage. It was Nizameyev's team-leading fifth goal of the season and second empty netter in as many games.
Roest again majorly contributed in a Tri-City win, stopping 30 of 33 Lincoln shots. Over his last two appearances, the Alberta native has halted 61 shots out of the 66 he's faced.
