Storm sweep weekend set with Des Moines, collect 5-3 Saturday night victory in Kearney

Saturday's box score

KEARNEY, Neb. – Nolan Roed and Bode Laylin's three-point performances helped the Tri-City Storm to a 5-3 victory and weekend sweep of the Des Moines Buccaneers on Saturday night at Viaero Center.

Tri-City (17-15-3, 37 pts) beat the same opponent in consecutive games for the first time at home this season. The Storm collected a 6-4 victory in the series opener on Friday. Des Moines (15-17-2, 32 pts) is 0-5-0 in two-goal contests during 2024-2025.

Tri-City began the scoring just over four minutes into the contest. During a Storm offensive zone possession, Roed snatched a rebound near Des Moines's net after Laylin fired a shot from the Buccaneer blue line. Laylin's rip was halted by the stick of Des Moines goaltender Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau, who let a small rebound jump from his grasp. The puck was quickly scooped by Roed.

The Storm doubled their advantage about 90 seconds later. Immediately after a faceoff in the left wing circle of the Des Moines end, Easton Pace tallied his third goal in as many games after grabbing a loose puck that was swept backward in the draw by Storm center Cam Springer. Pace skated from the left wing boards to retrieve the puck at the top of the circle. It was his fourth tally of the season.

Tri-City's Shaun McEwen was assessed a double minor for high sticking 1:09 into the second period. The Buccaneers used just three seconds of power play time to find the scoreboard. Jack Kernan blasted a one-time feed from Richard Baran in the left wing circle of the Storm zone. It was Kernan's eighth power play goal of the season.

The Storm re-grew their advantage 26 seconds after. While still shorthanded on McEwen's double minor, Roed snuck a shot from the right wing circle of the Des Moines zone past Seguin-Lescarbueau's blocker side for his league-leading fourth shorthanded tally of the season.

Saturday was the St. Cloud State commit's fourth multi-goal game of the year and first since November 30 at Green Bay.

Des Moines again narrowed Tri-City's lead to one goal 13:49 into the second. Brittan Alstead collected his fifth of the season immediately after a Des Moines power play. The Buccaneers had just finished two minutes on the man advantage after Tri-City's Colby Woogk picked up a minor for holding.

A little under three minutes later, Laylin grabbed his second tally of the year on a back-door one-timer near the left post of the Des Moines net. The St. Thomas commit received a beautiful cross-ice feed from Nizameyev in the right wing circle.

After scoreless play for the majority of the third period, Des Moines was first to strike in the final frame with just under three minutes remaining in regulation. Andrew Clarke, from the left wing circle of the Tri-City zone, sent a rapid snapshot past Roest's blocker side after receiving a rink-wide pass from Brandt Harper. The Dartmouth commit's third goal of the weekend made it a 4-3 contest.

Des Moines pulled Seguin-Lescarbeau with just over a minute left in the game. Despite a handful of quality chances, the Buccaneers could not find an equalizer.

Tri-City struck with 11 seconds remaining on an Ashton Dahms empty netter. Dahms retrieved a loose puck near the Des Moines blue line, then walked on a breakaway toward the vacant cage.

Roest halted 24 of 27 Des Moines shots en route to his second straight win. The Alberta native started both games of the series for Tri-City.

The Storm produced 51 penalty minutes in the contest. Des Moines collected 47.

Up next: Tri-City heads to Frisco, Texas, next week to take on Fargo in the USHL's Frosty Cup Event. The Storm will play Thursday at 7 pm CT and Friday at 7 pm CT. Each contest will be broadcast on FloHockey and Storm Radio.
