Chicago collects 5-2 victory over Tri-City on Saturday night to sweep weekend series in Kearney

Saturday's box score

KEARNEY, Neb. – Tobias Ohman's career-high four-point evening and Jack Parsons's stellar work in net helped elevate the Chicago Steel to a 5-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm on Saturday night at Viaero Center.

Chicago swept the two game-series after recording a 3-1 win on Friday.

The Steel (12-25-3, 25 pts) notched consecutive victories for the third time this season. Tri-City (18-18-3, 39 pts) had not fallen in two straight home games since early November.

Chicago struck first on a man advantage late in the opening frame. Following a Tri-City bench minor for too many men on the ice, the Steel's Tobias Ohman possessed the puck in the right wing circle of the Storm zone. The Sweden native quickly fed a pass to the left post of Tri-City's net, where Teddy Mutryn used the blade of his stick to redirect the puck high into the Storm cage. It was Mutryn's team-leading 16th goal of the season and Chicago's second power play tally of the series.

The Steel doubled their advantage just under four minutes into the second. After pushing the puck into Tri-City's zone, Ohman sent a shot toward Storm goaltender Erick Roest. The Cornell commit made a difficult chest save but left a small rebound near his crease. Chicago's Ben Yurchuk, also on the rush, quickly moved in to thrust the loose puck around Roest for his eighth tally of the year.

Chicago took a three-goal lead near the halfway mark of the second. An Ohman snapshot from the right wing circle smacked the crossbar of Tri-City's net, then ricocheted off the left post. Initially ruled no goal, the call on the ice was overturned following a video review.

The Steel again struck within the first few minutes of the third period. As Chicago rushed into Tri-City's end, Ohman fed Will Tomko on a rink-wide pass to the right wing circle. Tomko drove toward the Storm net, then lifted a slick backhand shot over Roest's right shoulder for his eighth of the season.

The Storm climbed back to make it a two-goal contest in the middle part of the third.

Tri-City's first goal came on a Colby Woogk shot from the right wing boards of Chicago's zone. At the 10:15 mark of the frame, Woogk retrieved a Noah Ziskie feed from the high slot and flipped the puck past Parsons, who was contending with netfront traffic.

A little under five minutes later, Nolan Roed collected his first tally in four games, cutting Chicago's lead in half. The centerman won a draw backward in the right wing circle of the Steel zone. After a brief puck battle featuring multiple players near the faceoff dot, Roed fired a shot toward Parsons, who let the puck slowly squeak under his right arm. The St. Cloud State commit rapidly moved to the Chicago crease and stuffed the loose puck home.

Tri-City called a timeout and pulled Roest with 3:30 left. The Storm earned a few scoring chances during the ensuing 6-on-5 advantage, but did not score.

Chicago found the empty net with 1:27 remaining. Adam Valentini worked the puck down the right wing of the sheet, then centered a feed to Luke Goukler in Tri-City's zone. The Cumming, Gerogia native released a snapshot for his ninth tally of the season.

Chicago won the shot count 26-22. It was the fourth time the Steel had outshot their opponent in 39 games this season.

Parsons, who halted 20 of 22 shots on Saturday, collected his seventh victory of the year. The Providence commit stopped 55 of the 58 attempts he faced during the series.

Roest made 21 saves on 25 shots. The Alberta native fell to 9-12-1 across 23 appearances in 2024-2025.

Up next: Tri-City visits Muskegon for a two-game series next weekend at Trinity Health Arena. Puckdrop on Friday is scheduled for 6 pm CT. Saturday's game will begin at 5 pm CT. Each contest will be broadcast on FloHockey and Storm Radio.
