Phantoms utilize strong third period to beat Storm 4-2 on Saturday night at Viaero Center

Saturday's box score

KEARNEY, Neb. – Coleson Hanrahan and Landan Resendes third period goals helped the Youngstown Phantoms to a 4-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm on Saturday night at Viaero Center.

Tri-City celebrated Epilepsy Awareness Night presented by The Epilepsy Foundation - Great Plains Region. Storm players and Stormy wore special Epilepsy-themed uniforms that were auctioned off live on the ice after the game. Proceeds benefited The Epilepsy Foundation - Great Plains Region.

The Storm also hosted Non-Profit Night during the game. Numerous local non-profits were in attendance to inform fans of their purpose and how to get involved.

Youngstown (36-18-1, 73 pts) swept the two-game series in Kearney after collecting a 4-1 win on Friday. Tri-City (25-26-4, 54 pts) has dropped five of its past six games.

The Phantoms opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 17:38 mark of the opening frame. Evan Jardine collected his 18th tally of the season on a hard snapshot from the Tri-City slot after receiving a feed from Jamison Sluys. It was the Harvard commit's 12th power play marker of the campaign.

Tri-City evened the game with a man advantage goal of their own just over two minutes later. With six seconds remaining in the first period, Cooper Simpson blasted a one-timer from the right wing circle of the Phantoms' zone past Youngstown netminder Owen Lepak. A Colby Woogk pass from the slot set up Simpson's shot. The North Dakota commit collected his first goal of the year with Tri-City. Simpson recently joined the team after the conclusion of his season at Shakopee High School in Minnesota.

The Phantoms jumped back ahead early in the second. A deflected puck was halted by the pads of Jones as Youngstown moved into its offensive zone. Jones attempted to cover the loose puck with his glove, but did not maintain firm possession. The Phantoms' Justin Kerr charged toward the net and shoved the puck home for his sixth goal of the season.

The Storm re-tied the game at the 12:41 mark of the second. Immediately after the expiration of a Tri-City power play, Cam Springer fed an open Ashton Dahms in front of the Youngstown cage. The Lakeville, Minnesota native blasted a one-timer through Lepak for his tenth goal of the season and second in March.

Youngstown put up the eventual game-winner at the 7:37 mark of the third. The Phantoms' Jamison Sluys grabbed a loose puck off a faceoff in the left circle of the Storm zone, then fed Hanharan at the center point. Hanrahan strode to the slot, then sent a snapshot past Jones' blocker side for sixth of the year.

With 4:05 left in regulation, Tri-City's Artemi Nizameyev was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for slew footing. Nizameyev upended Youngstown's Jack Hextall during a race for a loose puck near the left wing half wall of the Phantoms' zone. Tri-City was shorthanded for the remainder of the third.

Down 3-2 with a little over two minutes left in the game, the Storm pulled Jones for an extra skater. Despite several good looks, Tri-City did not score.

With an empty Storm net and five skaters on the ice for each team, Youngstown sealed the game with a Landan Resendes empty netter at the 19:35 mark of the third. The Phantoms won a board battle on the left wing of their zone, then cleared the puck down the ice. Resendes moved quickly to win the loose puck in the Tri-City zone and strode toward the vacant cage, where he finished the play to make it 4-2.

Lepak halted 26 of 28 Storm shots in 58:14 of ice time. The Western Michigan commit was pulled from the game with just over 90 seconds remaining after suffering an injury while stopping a Carmelo Crandell shot. Melvin Strahl, who started Friday's game, kept out all three shots he saw through the remainder of regulation.

Jones stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced Saturday. It was the Bakersfield, California native's first start since March 8.

A combined 65 penalty minutes were assessed in the game. The Storm picked up 37 on nine infractions. It was Tri-City's highest penalty minute total in one contest since Saturday, January 18, when the Storm collected 51 penalty minutes in a 5-3 home win over Des Moines.
