Courtemanche’s overtime winner hands Tri-City 3-2 Saturday victory at Omaha

Saturday's box score

OMAHA, Neb. – Sammy Courtemanche scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime as the Tri-City Storm defeated the Omaha Lancers 3-2 on Saturday night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena.

Tri-City (7-3-0, 14 pts) swept the two-game weekend home-and-home series with the Lancers. Omaha (2-5-1, 5 pts) earned a standings point but has dropped five of its past six games.

Just over a minute into the extra frame, Courtemanche gathered a loose puck in his defensive zone following an Omaha turnover. The Yale commit pushed down the ice for a breakaway. As he approached Lancer goaltender Anthony Sciere, Courtemanche made a forehand-backhand move to tuck the puck over Sciere's left pad, handing Tri-City the win. The goal was Courtemanche's third game-winning tally of the year, tying the USHL rookie lead.

Omaha forced overtime by wiping away a two-goal Storm advantage in the third period.

The Lancers cut Tri-City's lead to 2-1 at the 3:35 mark of the third. Off an Artim Prima feed, Yegor Kim fired a close-range shot toward Storm goaltender Ryan Denes, then collected his own rebound and finished a backhand shot into the goal for his team-leading fifth tally of the year.

Omaha evened the game at two while on the power play in the final four minutes of regulation. As the Lancers possessed in their offensive zone, Prima fired a shot from the right wing that snuck through Denes's glove side.

Tri-City built its 2-0 lead with one goal in the first and one goal in the second period.

The Storm produced the first goal of the game just 31 seconds into regulation. Nathan Garski drove the puck down the left wing of the Omaha zone, then fired a shot on Sciere. The puck went off the back side of Sciere, then eventually bounced its way into the Omaha net. After an initial no goal call for a Lancer defender playing the puck with their hand in the crease, the officials utilized video review to overturn the decision.

Tri-City doubled its lead in the middle part of the second. As the Storm quickly transitioned the puck up the ice, Aleksandr Sokolov fed Courtemanche near the Omaha blue line. Courtemanche dashed to the right circle of the Lancers zone and flung a shot into the top left corner of the Omaha net past the blocker side of Sciere.

Denes came up with his third win of the year after halting 34 of 36 Omaha shots. Sciere suffered the loss after stopping 27 of 30 Storm attempts.

Up next: The Storm end their three-game in three-day weekend when Sioux City visits Viaero Center for Racing Day on Sunday. Puckdrop is set for 4:05 pm.
